Stop The War Marks Iraq Invasion 10 years on

Peace campaigners will mark the 10-year anniversary of Britain's biggest ever demonstration next month with a series of events designed to re-energise their efforts. Around two million people flooded London's streets to campaign against Britain's involvement in the Iraq war in February 2003.
Despite the rally, which politicised a new generation of people, Tony Blair took Britain to war. Exactly a decade later tensions in the Middle East are at breaking point and British troops remain in Afghanistan.
Now anti-war campaigners are to hold a major conference that aims to "confront war 10 years on." Stop the War coalition convenor Lindsey German said: "The British government has learnt nothing from the war in Iraq.
"As millions around the world predicted, the war on terror has caused catastrophe from Afghanistan and Pakistan through Iraq and the Middle East to Libya, Somalia and beyond."
  • The event takes place at Friends Meeting House, Euston, on Saturday February 9. Price £15/£8. Ring  (020) 7561-9311 or visit tenyearson.org.uk for more details.

Writ issued on behalf of hundreds of thousands who died in Spanish genocide

writ issued on behalf of hundreds of thousands who died in Spanish genocide | Darker Net: "Between 1936 and 1977 hundreds of thousands of people were murdered (‘disappeared’) in Spain by the forces of Francoism. This genocide was blotted out of existence by a law passed in 1977 making it illegal to even mention this dark side of recent Spanish history. In 2008 the celebrated jurist Baltasar Garzon declared the acts of repression committed by the Franco regime to be crimes against humanity and accounted them in more than one hundred thousand killings during and after the Spanish Civil War. However, litigation was taken, in turn, against him by conservative and right-wing organisations, which resulted in the legal action being halted. Now, all that has changed with a number of organisations joining legal action via the courts in Argentina against the Spanish State. Now the truth of the genocide will come out. Details of the writ are given below by the CNT, one of the main litigants."

The Mess in Iraq

.:Middle East Online::The Mess in Iraq:.: "Sounding like Assad, and like Egypt’s Mubarak earlier, Maliki is blaming conspiracies and foreign elements for the protests, including “enemies of the political process, the armed terrorist groups and the remnants of the former regime,” even though the protests have been led by many thousands of ordinary Iraqis. Muqtada al-Sadr, the rebellious-minded Shiite cleric who’s been a thorn in Maliki’s side for years, is tilting nationalist once again, threatening to support the anti-Maliki protests. “The Iraqi spring is coming,” he said. That’s a portentous comment, since it was support from Sadr that allowed Maliki to assemble his ruling majority in parliament."

Thousands rally for Iraqi prisoners' release

Thousands rally for Iraqi prisoners' release - Yahoo! News UK: ""How much longer will our children stay in prisons for no other reason than being Sunni," asked a man who gave his name as Abu Abdullah.
Another protester who identified herself as Umm Mohammed told AFP: "My three children were arrested four years ago for no reason and I ask Maliki -- release them."
Meanwhile Sadr, whose movement counts 40 lawmakers and five ministers among its supporters, attended Friday prayers at the Abdul Qader Gilani mosque, a prominent Sunni mosque in Baghdad.
Large-scale protests also took place in several cities north of Baghdad in Salaheddin, Diyala, Kirkuk, and Nineveh provinces, while demonstrators in western Anbar province continued to block off a highway linking Iraq to Syria and Jordan for a 12th successive day."

Muqtada Al-Sadr predicts ‘Iraqi Spring’

Shiite cleric predicts ‘Iraqi Spring’ as Sunnis continue to protest: "Protesters have been holding rallies in the western desert province of Anbar and other Sunni strongholds for more than a week.
The demonstrations follow the arrest of bodyguards assigned to the Sunni finance minister, Rafia al-Issawi, though they tap into deeper Sunni grievances of perceived discrimination by the government of Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki."
